Why our family is raising funds for HDF Scholars:
As an educator, my motto (Alex here) is, "Talent is equally distributed, opportunity is not." That is one of the reasons our family started this scholarship in 2020, with the goal of increasing support to immigrant students (or children of immigrants) as they pursue a college degree.
Many of you know that last year, HDF scholars lost over $400,000 in matching dollars from previous HDF partner colleges and universities that used to award HDF scholars additional financial aid, but they chose to stop their support.
To make things worse, two weeks ago, a federal judge ruled that the current Kansas law which allows certain undocumented students to receive in-state college tuition violates federal law. This ruling will make college significantly more expensive for students who grew up in Kansas and attended high school in the state. I sent a memo to HDF scholars affirming our support and sharing that HDF scholarship eligibility is not changing. HDF will continue to support scholars regardless of immigration status. Like HDF, the Pérez Gómez and Rico families believe in their talent and academic goals, and remain committed to supporting them along the way.
