Why I’m Raising Funds for HDF

I’m proud to participate in Cambio para Cambio because I believe in the power of education to create opportunities—not just for individual students, but for families and our entire community. For more than 40 years, HDF has invested in Hispanic students across the Kansas City area through scholarships and college preparation programs, helping students pursue their educational goals and build brighter futures.

Every contribution to my campaign helps create more opportunities for students to access and complete higher education.

Since creating the Luchona scholarship in 2021, we’ve raised and awarded $34,000 that have supported 9 young women in their higher education journeys. Of those 9, one just began her journey at K-State, another has graduated from Johnson County Community College, and one more is finishing her graduate degree at Rockhurst University.

A huge thank you to all of you who have supported in the past, as this is a direct result of our collective efforts.

If you’d like to help us continue building upon this work, we are once again matching donations up to $2,500 - which will then be matched 100% by HDF’s generous donors. ($10 donation = $40 after match)

What does Luchona mean? Luchona derives from the word Luchar which translates to fight, to resist, to strive. All things my mother represented coming to this country and bringing me along. This scholarship honors that resilience and aims to support young ladies who are out here doing everything possible to achieve their goals.
