Together, we can create more scholarship opportunities for Latino students in Kansas City.

This scholarship started two years ago in memory of Temo P. Sanchez and in honor of his wife, Chayo Gómez, both from Jalisco, Mexico. Temo and Chayo immigrated to Missouri in 1994 and were married for 18 years before Temo physically departed, leaving Chayo with four children who remind her of their love story everyday.

Through the devastation, Chayo’s strength surfaced like never before. She found herself a young widow, undocumented and responsible for raising their four children. Chayo worked two jobs, oftentimes seven days a week through the rest of the time her children were in high school and others in college. Three of their children were also undocumented students, not eligible for any federal grants or loans, navigating the complex system that is higher education as first generation students, also working after school.

The scholarship will continue to be awarded to HDF Scholars who identify as being undocumented, giving preference to lower income and first generation applicants. When Chayo’s children would get discouraged along the way due to their lack of legal status, she encouraged them to carry on with their studies, reminding them education is one thing that can’t be taken away. Chayo now resides in Mexico and is enjoying traveling the world and spoiling her grandchildren.
